Introvert jobs: every occupation scored for social demands

Every list of jobs for introverts is somebody's opinion. This table is built from numbers. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, rates 760 occupations on seven kinds of social demand. We combined those into one score from 0 to 100, then matched each job to its median pay, projected growth and typical entry education from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A lower score means the work asks for less contact, talking and teamwork. Search for a job, or click a column heading to sort.

How the score works

For each occupation, O*NET publishes a rating from 1 to 5 on each of these seven items. We rescaled each to 0 to 100 and took the average. Where O*NET splits an occupation into several detailed versions, we averaged those.

O*NET itemWhat it measures
Contact With OthersHow much the job requires being in contact with others by any means.
Face-to-Face DiscussionsHow often the job involves face-to-face discussions with individuals and teams.
Telephone ConversationsHow often the job involves talking on the telephone.
Public SpeakingHow often the job involves speaking to groups.
Deal With External Customers or the PublicHow much the job involves serving customers or the general public.
Work With or Contribute to a Work Group or TeamHow important teamwork is to the job.
Conflict SituationsHow often the job involves dealing with conflict.

What this can't tell you

  • The scores describe what a job asks of workers. They do not measure personality, and they are not medical or psychological advice.
  • O*NET does not measure remote work, so the table can't show which jobs can be done from home.
  • Pay, growth and openings are national figures. Local pay varies a lot.
  • We left out 5 occupations that O*NET flags as unreliable, and 4 with no published annual median wage. 13 occupations in all are not ranked.
  • Social scores are one input. A quiet job can still be a poor fit for other reasons, such as hours, location or stress.
